Thailand is a Southeast Asian country characterized by its diverse cultural heritage, hospitality, and developing economy. It is one of the world's most popular tourist destinations and a regional hub for hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing, and technology. Bangkok is a large and cosmopolitan city, while Chiang Mai is a popular destination for those seeking a more relaxed lifestyle.

Why choose Thailand

  • International programs have low fees compared to Western countries and other Asian destinations
  • Universities offer high-quality English-taught programs in Thailand
  • It is a great value destination for students interested in hospitality, tourism, and related fields
  • It is easy to adapt to the local way of life because of Thailand's friendly nature
  • Proximity to other regional study destinations in Southeast Asia makes it a good choice for exploring the area

Education system

The Thai higher education system is managed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI). The system includes public universities, autonomous universities, Rajabhat and Rajamangala universities, and private Institutions. Some of the most prestigious universities offering international programs are Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, and Kasetsart University. Most degree courses last 4 years for an undergraduate and 1-2 years for a postgraduate. Universities operate on either a semester or a trimester system; Mahidol University International College, for example, has three trimesters, which start in September, January, and April.

Cost of studying

Tuition fees depend on the language of instruction, with Thai-taught programs being the most affordable and international programs the most expensive. For example, the tuition fee for international business administration at Mahidol University International College for non-resident students is around 1,100,100 THB for a 4-year Bachelor's degree program.

Living expenses

Compared to other study destinations, Thailand is quite affordable, especially outside the capital. Mahidol University International College provides approximate living expenses:
Accommodation (private dormitory): 5,500 – 15,000 THB per month
Utilities: Up to 2,000 THB per month
Food and drinks: 9,000 – 12,000 THB per month
On-campus dormitories, when available, are usually the most affordable option.

Culture and lifestyle

Thai's culture is characterized by Buddhism, respect for elders and royalty, and a relaxed attitude towards life. Students get a chance to experience the unique local culture that sees millions of people celebrating Songkran and Loy Krathong annually. There are also numerous night markets to explore and some of the best street food in the world, including vegetarian options.
Bangkok is a modern metropolis with many upscale shopping centers and a well-developed transport network, including the Skytrain, metro, and night buses, connecting all parts of the city. Outside the capital, one can enjoy beaches, islands, and mountainous landscapes. Thai's friendly nature makes it easy for foreigners to integrate into the local community. However, it is necessary to follow some local customs, for example, by dressing modestly in religious places and not criticizing the monarchy.

Entry requirements

Program Type Undergraduate – completion of class 12 or its equivalent; some programs have additional subject-specific requirements Postgraduate – a bachelor's degree in a relevant field English Proficiency for international programs – IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE scores as requested by the university Non-Immigrant ED Visa Requirements Passport valid for at least 6 months and recent passport-sized photos A letter of acceptance from a Thai educational institution with a copy of the signatory's ID and an official letter from the educational organization outlining the purpose of travel Proof of financial capacity to support one's stay in the country Application in the Thai embassy or consulate (the Royal Thai Embassy also provides an e-Visa).
